Malacca Food Guide – Best Foods and Where to find them
Malacca is abundance with historical heritage, making it to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Site and along with these heritages, come recipes that stem from the multicultural inheritance. Here are the top best food to try in Melaka:
1. HAINANESE CHICKEN RICE
No one will pass by Jonker Street without noticing the queue at Kedai Kopi Chung Wah, the place that sells the famed Hainanese chicken rice ball. Business is constantly brisk here, as travelers and locals alike flock to the humble Chinese-style coffee shop to try one of the best chicken rice around.
The soft and sheeny rice balls are so packed with flavors that they can be easily eaten alone. The flavour is naturally good, given how they cooked the rice in chicken broth before meticulously rolled them into a ball shape. One will easily chow down ten of these without realizing it.
Coupled with the rice ball is the boiled kampung chicken, with fragrant sesame oil. As with all nutritious kampung chicken, the leaner and lesser fat meat has a texture that is tougher to bite.

2. CENDOL
>
The best dessert time in Melaka is to savor the cold and refreshing cendol. The finely shaved ice, rich with coconut milk and topped with the heritage condiments, Gula Melaka is always a welcoming cure for the year-round warm climate.
The cendols in Melaka are generally good but here are a few notable ones:

3. SATAY CELUP
Satay is alike to skewers and ‘celup’ literally translated as ‘dip’. It’s unsurprising as the raw or semi-cooked ingredients were skewered and cooked by immersing them in hot peanut gravy. The gravy is creamy, sweet and aromatic, with a hint of spiciness that will slowly build up.
Served in self-service style, customers will select their favorite skewers, ranging from meat, innards, seafood, vegetables to veritable of fishballs, that were being kept fresh in chilled counters or fridge.

4. TRADITIONAL NYONYA KUIH
Nyonya kuih or cake is the specialty of Peranakan, who had improvised the original Malay kuih. The textures are mostly sticky and pleasantly soft to bite, attributed to the use of rice or glutinous rice flour in the recipe. Nyonya kuih is the favorite breakfast and tea time snack for Malaysian and best to chomp down with a perfect cup of Teh Tarik. There’s a variety of Nyonya Kuih but the most notable flavors are the bluish pulut tekan, ondeh-ondeh, kuih lapis, serimuka and ang ku kueh, just to name a few.
Baba Charlie

Opening hours: 10.30am-3.00pm, Close on Thursday.
5. KLEBANG COCONUT SHAKE
One of the most notable modern recipe created in Melaka is Klebang Coconut Shake. Coconut flesh, vanilla ice-cream and coconut water were blended to produce the creamy smoothie-like drink, the perfect ammo to combat the warm weather.
At Klebang Coconut Shake, there’s a counter that caters for takeaway which has the longer queue most of the time. It’s recommended to order for ‘drink-in’ where you get to sit comfortably (albeit no air condition) while trying out some of their kuih and snacks. However, their packed nasi lemak and mee siam are not recommended.

6.NYONYA LAKSA
Nyonya Laksa is another prized recipe of Peranakans descendants, which is a noodle dish immersed in curry gravy. Its flavor can vary from one eatery to another, as the generations modify the recipe over the time. Nonetheless, the signature of Nyonya Laksa is always the spicy punch, infused with multiple aromatic spices.

7. LOCAL SNACKS AND BISCUITS
The easiest way to buy all the local snacks under one roof, is by visiting San Shu Gong in the busiest stretch of Jonker Street.
As San Shu Gong is selling a wide variety of snacks including some non-native items, it will be good to have a rough idea of what you would like to buy first, or you might end up buying products that you could have cheaply buy at supermarkets.
A few examples of the good snacks are the dodol (a sticky sweet made from coconut and Gula Melaka), Gula Melaka, lime juice, home brand durian jam, beh teh soh and wife cakes (lou poh peng).
